- History
Polytechnic Institute of NYU athletics have a great history. In basketball, Polytechnic and Pratt Institute have one of the oldest rivalries in college basketball. Since 1904, they have battled it out in some of the "world's most famous arenas," including the old Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Armory, and the Meadowlands. In cross-country, Polytechnic is well known for being one of the founding colleges of the Halloween Run, an enormously popular tri-state event. Today, the event attracts over 17 colleges and 160 runners and is one of the largest of its kind in any collegiate athletic division.
Polytechnic Institute of NYU is the home of the Fighting Bluejays. Men's varsity sports here at NYU-Poly have a long tradition that dates back to the early 1900's. But men's varsity sports are not all that we have here at Polytechnic. Our women's program proudly hosts 8 women sports: Basketball, Softball, Tennis, Cross Country, Track & Field (Indoor & Outdoor), Volleyball and Judo. As you continue to consider your options for college, we hope you can see the possibilities of being a scholar-athlete at Polytechnic Institute of NYU. To sign up, simply stop by the Office of Athletics located at Rogers Hall 220 or contact them at (718)260-3453 for more information.
Acheivements
One of the things that make our scholar-athletes so special is that they are able to distinguish themselves on the playing field, while excelling in rigorous academic programs in engineering, science, and communications. For example, a recent Polytechnic graduate, Ivo Moyano had the highest steal-per-game percentage in NCAA Division III history, while maintaining a superior GPA in chemical engineering. Polytechnic athletes have consistently been selected as ECAC "Player of the Week" and "Rookie of the Week," as well as ranking in the top 25 in scoring and rebounding. Recently, one of our judo team members, Yevgeniy Rechkin, participated in the Maccabiah Games in Israel, helping the USA team win third place.
